Pumpkin Diva

What a fun cake I got to make this weekend!  I like to refer to it as the pumpkin diva cake.  I mean, what else would you call a jack-o-lantern with plump lips, eye makeup, and a hair bow?

I also made a little smash cake for the birthday girl.

Hello, gorgeous!

I carved my little diva out of a 6” round strawberry cake.  After filling and icing the cake with buttercream, I covered and decorated the pumpkin with homemade fondant.

The bottom tier was filled and iced with buttercream and decorated with fondant accents.

Aging Gracefully

I sometimes find it a bit of a challenge to design birthday cakes for adults.  Bright, fun kiddie cakes are easy for me to visualize, but it seems like I have to exercise my creativity a little more when I’m planning a cake for an older adult.  I guess I see it as a fine line between tastefully mature and boring.

The cake I’m sharing today was designed for a lady’s 79th birthday.  I tried to keep the color palette on this cake a little more sophisticated.  I mean, I really didn’t think the birthday “girl” would appreciate lime green, hot pink, and turquoise, so I chose cream, brown, and coral.

And instead of polka dots and stripes, I decided to use a couple of different techniques to create a cascading floral design.  I punched out some flowers from gumpaste and applied them to the cake, and I hand-painted a few flowers and vines directly onto the cake.

I love the dimension that I got by using the two different techniques for the flowers.

This cakes was made with 6” and 8” tiers and served approximately 30.  It was filled and iced with buttercream and covered with homemade fondant.  The flowers are made of gum paste, and the tiers are trimmed with satin ribbon.

“Year” Out!

It’s no secret that I absolutely hate the New York Yankees, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.  And a couple of weeks ago I had to make a birthday cake for my father-in-law. He’s a big Yankees fan, so I decided to go with baseball theme for his cake.

No baseball cake would be complete without some peanuts and popcorn, or at least fondant versions of them.  I hand-painted the details on the popcorn, peanuts, and bat using icing color.

Look “Who’s” One!

It seems cakes have been flying out of the oven around here lately! That’s a good thing, but as a result, I’m getting a little behind in editing my cake pictures and publishing them for y’all to see.  This Labor Day weekend I had a minute to sit down and look back through some of the cakes I’ve made over the past few months.  Here’s a cute little cake I did back in June for Allen’s first birthday.

Owls are such a popular trend right now.  From cakes to clothes, owls seem to be popping up on everything baby related.

A Game of Cat & Mouse

When it comes to cartoons, I’m old-school all the way.  Me no like Pokemon, Jimmy Neutron, Bubble Guppies, etc. etc. etc.

Give me Rocky & Bullwinkle, Fred Flintstone, Bugs Bunny, or these guys…

I was super excited when a mom contacted me about doing a Tom & Jerry cake for her four-year-old son.  She chose this design to go along with Blake’s swimming party.

The cake is covered with homemade fondant which I marbled with a couple of different shades of blue to give it a watery look. I also made the name with rolled fondant.

To make Tom & Jerry, I started with a base of rice cereal treats and covered it with a combination of fondant and gum paste.  These little guys took some time to complete.

Ty was a little confused at how Tom & Jerry were able to get so close to each other without fighting.

Under the Sea

Welcome, y’all.  Today we are going on a little underwater journey.  This mermaid cake was requested as a birthday surprise for Anna Cat.

Detail of the mermaid’s tail – I used the end of a round piping tip to push into the fondant to cut the scales.  I love the dimension that it added to the tail.

The mermaid cake was made using single layer 8” and 12” rounds and served approximately 30.  The bottom layer is covered with buttercream, and the “island” is covered with fondant.  The mermaid and shells are sculpted from fondant.

Ombre Dots

I’m constantly searching Pinterest for inspiration for my cakes.  One trend that is becoming really popular in everything from cakes to hair is ombre.  If you are not familiar with it, ombre refers to a gradation of colors from dark to light.  It’s simple, striking, and I love it!  I’ve incorporated the ombre design into a few of my cakes, including Lucy’s princess cake.  Last week I tried it out again on a simple baby shower/birthday cake.
